The Fraunhofer Institute for Organic Electronics, Electron Beam and Plasma Technology FEP works on innovative solutions in the fields of vacuum coating, surface treatment and organic semiconductors. The core competences electron beam technology, sputtering and plasma-activated deposition, high-rate PECVD as well as technologies for the organic electronics and IC/system design provide a basis for these activities.

Thus, we offer a wide range of research, development and pilot manufacturing opportunities, especially for the treatment, structuring and finishing of surfaces as well as for OLED micro displays, organic and inorganic sensors, optical filters and flexible OLED lighting. The upscaling of technologies to industrial quantities, the integration into suitable plant technology and into existing production processes as well as the possibility of technology transfer and licensing are essential services of our institute. The cost efficiency of a technology for industrial production is always taken into account.

Together with companies, research institutions and public institutions we are working on novel, pioneering technologies within public funded projects of various funding authorities. By this we are continuously enhancing our comprehensive know-how, which sets the basis to support our customers with their research and development projects from the first concept phase up to industrial realization.
Our aim is to seize the innovation potential of the electron beam, plasma technology and organic electronics for new production processes and devices and to make it available for our customers.

Main competences: vacuum coating (PECVD, sputtering, electron beam evaporation) and organic semiconductors (OLED, OLED-on-Silicon, OLED lighting, microdisplays)

Fraunhofer FEP uses a modern class 10 clean room of more than 900 m² (refitted in 2008) to meet the demands of further system engineering. Clean rooms are available for the development and pilot production of organic semiconductors. Complete electrical and non-electrical tests, reliability evaluations and the characterization of microchips are taken for granted.
For the deposition of organic and functional layers, Fraunhofer COMEDD utilizes the latest point and line sources for thermal evaporation and organic vapor phase deposition (OVPD).
Because OLED are manufactured at close-to-room temperature, it is possible to apply them to almost any substrate material - including not only glass but also silicon, metal or plastic films. Fraunhofer COMEDD provides modern equipment for the integration of all of these substrate materials.
