Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant is an independent, open access service provider for process development, scale-up and custom manufacturing of biobased products and processes. The state-of-the-art facility operates from a laboratory level to a multi-ton scale with a wide and flexible spectrum of modular unit operations. It is an open innovation infrastructure that enables innovators to cross the valley of death between research and market for the KET Industrial Biotech as it translates biobased lab protocol into viable industrial processes.
Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant works B2B, or in consortia with research institutes and industry. The pilot plant enables the conversion of biomass (e.g. agricultural crops and by-products, industrial side streams) into biochemicals, biomaterials, biofuels and other bioproducts. Along with private, bilateral projects, Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant is currently involved in many (21) consortium-based projects within the Horizon 2020/ BBI JU (BIOMAC, SMARTBOX, Glaukos, Sylfeed, BioSFERA, Usable Packaging, BioRen, Prolific, NewPack, SIMBA, CO2PERATE, BIOCON-CO2, KET4CP, Afterlife, etc.).
Services provided
Process development: concept design, fermentation optimization, downstream processing development and optimization

From TRL 4 to TRL 8 for Industrial biotechnology processes
From research to product, the Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant can assist you in different phases of the innovation chain.
The pilot or demonstration phase, during which a lab scale process is translated into an industrial process, can be expensive, risky and time consuming. Scale-up work is a challenge for many companies because of the cost, capital equipment and expertise needed, while there are no guarantees for successful commercialization at that stage. Early collaboration with experienced personnel in a flexible (shared) facility with a wide range of pilot equipment can substantially reduce costs, risks and development time and reinforces the chance to successful market entry.
