As part of a series of analytical reports on advanced technologies’ trends, this report focuses on Blockchain as one of the key technologies that are currently bringing about impactful changes in Europe’s banking and finance sectors, as well as in other European industries.
For a technology that has been around for little over 10 years, Blockchain has seen more than its fair share of irrational exuberance and unfair dismissal. The hype period between 2017 and 2018 convinced a large number of people that Blockchain will save the world by tackling every major problem of modern society. When these predictions inevitably did not come to pass many in the business world were quick to dismiss it as nothing more than hype. Now that we have some distance in time from that period, we can have a lot more balanced and accurate view of Blockchain and its place in the ever-shifting technological landscape in Europe.
The Advanced Technology (AT) Watch report series is meant to play a complementary role to the other analytical, policy and statistical reports of the project, by focusing on market, business and socio-economic trends driven by technology innovation. This AT Watch encompasses therefore the whole set of advanced technologies that are a priority for the European industrial policy. These technologies enable process, product and service innovation throughout the economy, thus fostering industrial modernisation.
